Toastmasters Core Value: Respect

Why should we show respect for others?

When I encounter someone I admire, I want to show them respect because it is a way to convey my appreciation to them.  But even when someone annoys or frustrates me, even when someone may not seem worthy of respect, it is still appropriate to treat them in a respectful manner.  I should show respect even in those cases, because respect is a reflection of who I am.  Respect is less about the other person and more about how act.

How can we show respect for others?

My biggest opportunity to be more respectful of others is in being patient and listening to all they have to say.  When I am listening to others, I sometimes find myself wishing they would wrap things up so I can get on with what I need to do or say what I want to say.  This isn't very respectful, is it?  Even if I don't think what the other person is saying is useful to me, I should still be respectful and listen:

1) It's the kind thing to do and reflects the person I want to be.

2) I might actually be wrong (*gasp*) and find the person has something truly insightful or interesting to contribute.

3) It sets a good example for others, including the person to whom I am listening.

I don't think its a coincidence that an organization that focuses on communication and leadership skills has respect as its second core value.  A big part of being a good communicator and leader is showing respect to others, in large part by truly listening to what they have to say.  If we show respect to others, they are more likely to follow us as leaders.  If we show respect to others by listening to them, they will want to listen to us in return.  Mutual listening improves overall communication.

Will you join me in striving to be more respectful of others and truly listen to them?
